Elegant dining, fabulous dancing, and a poignant tribute to outstanding community leaders will top the bill for the Southern Ocean County Hospital Foundation’s 36th Annual Chrysanthemum Ball, to be held on Saturday, November 3rd, beginning at 7:00 pm. Caesars Atlantic City provides an exquisite backdrop for the signature event of the season. The beautiful simplicity of autumn’s quintessential flower, the Chrysanthemum, is the theme for an evening to commemorate time-honored traditions, while celebrating new memories in the making. Chairs of this year’s gala are Drs. Jeffrey and Sheila Mazzatta and Drs. Joseph and Kim Lattanzi. At this year’s Ball, the SOCH Foundation proudly honors the recipients of the James J. Mancini Medal for Community Service; the Robert S. Irvin, MD Medal for Medical Service, and the Zena Josephson Medal for Volunteer Service. “This hospital would not exist without the drive, passion, and dedication of local leaders who fought to give our community access to the healthcare services they deserve,” said Chris Rollins, Executive Director of the SOCH Foundation. “These medals pay tribute to our founding fathers and mothers, and at the same time shine the well deserved spot light on the leaders of today, who will help ensure our future success.” James J. Mancini served as chairman of the SOCH Board from 1982 until his death in 2003. Throughout his distinguished career he served as a Freeholder, Assemblyman, and the Mayor of Long Beach Township for 39 years. His widow, Madeline Mancini will present the medal named in his memory to Peter and Deborah Goldman. Mr. Goldman is retired from his family owned business, Johanna Farms, which became the largest independent dairy in the U.S. During this time, Peter served as a Director of the Citrus Board of the New York Cotton Exchange, Director on the Milk Industry Foundation in Washington, D.C., and served on the board and as President of the National Juice Products Association in Florida. For many years, he mediated cases in Family Court and Small Claims Court in Ocean County. Debby also worked at Johanna Farms. In 1982, Debby struck out on her own, and started an executive recruiting firm, specializing in the food and beverage industries. During this time, she served on the board of Chapin School in Princeton, N.J. and Arcadia University in Glenside, Pa. After building her own successful business, she joined Peter in retirement in 1992. Peter and Debby have devoted their time and energy to numerous non-profit organizations, including Southern Ocean County Hospital. The Robert S. Irvin, MD Medal for Medical Services is named for the first president of the SOCH medical staff, and will be presented by Christopher Irvin, Dr. Irvin’s son. His award recognizes a member of the medical profession whose talent and devotion left an indelible mark on our community. The recipient, Ophthalmologist Alan Erickson, MD, began his private practice in Manahawkin as well as his long association with Southern Ocean County Hospital in the summer of 1983. He was board certified by the American Academy of Ophthalmology in 1985. Dr. Erickson served in various capacities at SOCH including President of the Medical Staff. His private practice has grown with the welcome addition of his partners Neil Dreizen, MD, Robert E. Lee, MD, and Elena Drudy, MD and John Nutaitis, OD. The Zena
Josephson Medal for Volunteer Service is named for the woman who gave
birth to the idea of hosting a formal ball to benefit the Hospital. This medal
will be presented by Jeri Riffle, daughter of the late Zena Josephson. Now,
36 years later, her “idea” has blossomed into one of the Hospital’s
most successful events. The recipients are Fred and Marcia Duffy. Fred
is a SOCH Foundation Board of Trustee member and has served on many committees
since 1998. Marcia has been a volunteer at SOCH in the Emergency
Room, at the Front Desk, and as a hospice volunteer. Both Fred and Marcia
have been involved in numerous church and local community clubs and activities. The event will close with the winners of the silent auction and the drawing of the Chrysanthemum Ball 50/50 Raffle. These raffle tickets are available to the community for $50, and only 800 tickets will be sold. If all 800 tickets sell, first prize will be $12,000, second prize will be $6,000 and third prize will be $2,000. “I’d like to personally thank dinner chairs Lori Wyrsch, Marcie Wyrsch, and Jessica Selert, ad journal chair Tim Wallace, and 50/50 raffle chair Pat Muszynski for their donation of time and talent and their commitment to making this event a success,” said Lisa Klein, Director of Special Events. For more information on reservations for the Ball (admission is $200 per person), or for a $50 50/50 raffle ticket, call Lisa Klein at the SOCH Foundation, (609) 978-3076.
